In this unboxing video, our RPG Tsar looks at one of the true gems of our collection. It’s a 1st printing Dungeons & Dragons woodgrain box, autographed by the co-creators of D&D, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. Only 1000 copies of this set were ever printed, and each was hand assembled (probably in Gary Gygax’s kitchen!) The rarity, stunning condition, and the autographs by the late co-creators make this a real one-of-a-kind treasure.
This boxed set is also an important piece of gaming history. In some ways, it’s THE piece of gaming history, and Dungeons & Dragons would go on to launch an entire hobby industry. Back in 1974, though, this was just a homemade ruleset for playing fantasy games instead of historic miniatures. The game only had three classes, halflings were hobbits, and the rules featured stats for the Balrog. Also, you needed a copy of Chainmail to run combat. If you’re interested in a little more history on the different versions of D&D, we wrote some articles about it.
